You Don't Know Jack Presented by Masatoshi Hamada is the Japanese localization of the You Don't Know Jack Volume 2, which was released in March 30, 2000[↑]. It was made in association with the comedy agency Yoshimoto Kogyo Co. Ltd., and was hosted by Masatoshi Hamada. It is the only Japanese version of a You Don't Know Jack game. It contains a total of 250 questions.
Differences[]
The differences between the American and Japanese versions are as follows:
- The game was hosted by Masatoshi Hamada, who was a popular comedian known for his performances as the comedy duo Downtown, co-hosts of the variety TV show Gaki no Tsukai, as well as being the Japanese voice of Shrek.
- Hamada does double duty as the host and the green-room signup assistant.
- Question values are converted with the exchange rate $1,000 = ¥10,000.
- This is about 10 times less money in real life, but considering the winnings from Japanese quiz shows, this is realistic. For example, the Japanese version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? awards 10 million yen as its full prize; ¥10,000,000 was only £60,455 GBP or $95,356 USD as of its first airing in 2000.
- The engine is modified so that katakana charaters can be entered via romaji input. (i.e. phonetically via the Latin alphabet). However, most animations and menus are kept in American English.
- The DisOrDat (ディス・オア・ダット disu oa datto) is largely unchanged.
- Gibberish Questions (バンザイヒアリング banzai hiaringu) are mostly unchanged, although they are more difficult, as the phrases tend to be much shorter, and the clues are often practically necessary to answer the question.
- The Gibberish Question intros have the voices saying the American English phrases, but their video modified to have Japanese text written in romaji. e.g. As the crowd says "Ticklish testgum", the video says MANKAI HIMA NINPU (“bored pregnant woman in full bloom”).
- "Look closely" questions are kept in, with Japanese visual puns.
- The Jack Attack (ジャックアタック jakku atakku) shows the text "Remember the hint" instead of "Remember the clue", most likely because the translators did not expect most Japanese people to know the word "clue", but "hint" is used as a loanword in Japanese (ヒント).
- Celebrity Collect Calls (人気者テレホンクイズ ninkimono terehon kuizu) feature these three people, all with career connections to the host Masatoshi Hamada:
- Hitoshi Matsumoto, a Japanese film director and other half of the comedy duo Downtown with Masatoshi Hamada. Naturally, he also appeared in Gaki no Tsukai; footage of him howling in joy in Gaki no Tsukai became an internet meme as “screaming Asian man”.
- Takashi Naitō, a Japanese actor, voice actor, and TV and radio host. He co-starred with Hamada in many movies, such as Shōwa Teppūden: Nihonkai (1991), Jinsei wa Jōjō da (1995) and Ryōma ni Omakase! (1996), and affectionately calls him 師匠 (“maestro”).
- Keisuke Horibe, a Japanese actor and screenwriter. As himself and as a part of comedy duo K2, he appeared in variety shows such as Waratte Iitomo!. He co-starred with Hamada in Gaki no Tsukai.
- The fake commercials are replaced with a handful of outtakes.
- The Screws are called ネジ (neji). However, it is still activated using the S key, unlike the German version, which remapped the Screw key to N to match the German word Nagel.

- This is the only version of You Don't Know Jack that is not hosted by a fictional character.
