You Don't Know Jack: 5th Dementia is the thirteenth installment in the You Don't Know Jack series and the ninth general knowledge edition. It is the first game in the series to feature online functionality. It was originally released on October 31, 2000 and is hosted by Schmitty.
Unlike other classic-era entries, there is no Steam re-release for 5th Dementia. As a result, this game is not playable on Windows 7 or later without a virtual machine or another type of compatibility layer.
Features & Question Types[]
You Don't Know Jack: 5th Dementia contains more than 600 new questions, presented in a similar style to previous games in the series with the same quick and caustic wit.
Similar to Headrush, once all players have entered they name they then select an "alter-ego" to represent them visually in-game. These alter-ego's are initially hidden; all players get is a short albeit vague description as to who or what that "alter-ego" will look like. Once this process has been completed, the game begins.
Also similar to The Ride, players buzz in to select a monetary value for the question. In games with more than one player, everyone's chosen value is added together and that becomes the money on offer. If a player doesn't buzz in after a while, the value will default to $0.
This version is the only one with the question type Bug Out. For each of the 7 stages, a group is given (e.g. “Brady Bunch kids”). Bugs crawl across the screen, bearing an option each (e.g. “Marcia”, “Jan”, “Greg”). Players must buzz in when they see a bug bearing an option that doesn't fit the group (e.g. “Carol”, who was the mom, not one of the kids). The prize for the first six stages start out at $100 and increase in $100 increments, while the final seventh stage is worth the value chosen before the question. In multiplayer games, Bug Out is zero-sum; the winnings for a correct answer are taken from the other players, and the penalties for a wrong answer are given to the other players.
5th Dementia came out with online multiplayer capabilities. It seems to have had a chat option, but the online servers have been shut down, and no mods have been developed to bring the game back online.
Fun Facts[]
- If all players don't pick a value during a normal question, a Dis or Dat, or the Jack Attack, Schmitty will automatically change the values. If no one picks a value during a normal question, the value will change to $1. If no one buzzes during a Dis or Dat, the value will change to $500. If no one picks a value during a Jack Attack, the value will change to $2000.
