The Poll Mine is the second game to be announced for The Jackbox Party Pack 8, having been announced on June 11, 2021. You work together in teams to choose which door is the safest to enter, based entirely on a survey system.

History[]

The game was created by a team of game designers who were entertained by the unique ways each playtesting team responded. “The thing that stood out quickest was that the answers were wildly different between different groups,” noted The Poll Mine’s Director, Warren Arnold.

Arnold sees this new offering as an extension of previous Jackbox Games favorite, Guesspionage, which asks players to divine the thoughts of 100 random strangers. The goal in The Poll Mine, however, is to be more personal and ramp up the tension.

The conception of The Poll Mine started with Arnold asking random survey questions on social media. “As it turns out, people love to take surveys and they especially want to know how others answered,” Arnold remarked. This observation about people wanting to know the “correct” survey answers is what led to the dramatic stakes of escaping from an enchanted mine by finding the “right” door.

Once it was decided that the teams would be “adventure parties” navigating a mystical cave, Lead Artist Bruno Rodríguez went to work. “I really enjoy the aesthetics of some early dungeon crawlers and fantasy RPG video games. I wanted to evoke some of that look and mix it with a more current, yet wacky, art style.” Rodríguez said.

Gameplay[]

You're trapped in a magic mine! The witch, Laverne Caverne, is chasing you and your team depends on your next step. There are 8 doors in front of you. The only way to choose a safe path is to determine which household device is the least reliable... according to the players.

After dividing into two groups of adventurers, you should choose the 3-5 (depending on the round) best options in categories such as: "Favorite Ice Cream Filling” " The most annoying Cinematic Trope" “What is the best bird?”

While you are marking your opinion, other players will do the same, and the path to escape will be marked with the three most popular answers. In Round 2 you have to find the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th most voted answers. In the final round, you have to choose the right answers from 8th-1st

Starting with the Yellow/Blue team, the team (or lone player if they're devious enough to) will discuss one option to select that they think fits the criteria. However, the one with the torch can make the executive decision. Failure to respond within the time limit with a choice or choosing one that does not fit the criteria will deduct 1 torch. Getting one correct will net you 1 torch. Then the next team will go and do the same thing.

The game has a streamer mode. When audience switched on, activates all the settings designed specifically for live streaming!

Final Round[]

In the final round, things will act the same with 3 differences

  1. Getting a correct answer will NOT net you a torch, however getting one wrong will still deduct 1
  2. If you or your team loses your last torch, you are still in the game. The other team needs to get 1 right in response of your wrong choice to win. If they get one in response, you gain 1 torch
  3. A winner is declared when one team loses all their torches OR all 8 answers have been found (in the second case, the winner is the one with the most torches)

If both teams end with the same amount of torches after the Final Round, both teams are seen at the exit with a monster taking the loser's place at the bottom.

Trivia[]

  • The Poll Mine is the first (and probably only) Jackbox Game to offer a unique streamer mode that allows the audience's opinions to actually become part of the gameplay. However, Guesspionage offers a similar feature with audiences of 5 or greater, though it is not a separate mode and is activated automatically.
