Role Models is one of the games featured in The Jackbox Party Pack 6.
"We theorize every friend group has some version of the smart one, the popular one, the troubled loner who I can change... You get the idea. And these "roles" make it a lot easier to figure people out! With science!"
Role Models takes place in a lab of sorts, and is hosted a dismembered set of eyes and gloved hands, paired with a feminine voice who guides players through the game with a short (skippable) tutorial and quips throughout the rounds.
Gameplay begins with a set of categories presented to those playing, and they get to vote for which category the round will be themed with. Once players have voted, the category with the most votes is chosen, and a few "roles"--equal to the number of players--from this category will be shown on screen (ex: if the category "The Heist" is chosen in a 6 player game, the players will be shown things like The Brains, The Muscle, The Driver, The Distraction, The Traitor, and The Law).
Once a category is chosen, players will classify themselves and their peers as each of the given roles. Roles are then given to players based on majority vote, and those who voted with the majority obtain one science pellet. When obtaining a role, players always earn one science pellet, no matter their vote.
When two or more players tie for a role, they are pitted against each other in what is essentially a fight for it. Players will either:
- be given a prompt to write for, which remaining players then vote for who wrote a more fitting response to
- be given a prompt like "impersonate Frankenstein" to perform. Players then vote for who did the prompt better
- or be given a question, i.e. "who's scarier?" where players vote for who is, well.. in this case, scarier
The winning player gets 3-4 science pellets.
If a player doesn't have enough 'data' (votes on the last remaining role/other roles) on them, the group will be given two options: the remaining role and a new role that also fits the theme. (i.e. theme is deadly sins, options for roles are wrath and envy.) Remaining players vote for which role fits the roleless player better. The player, upon obtaining their role, may get a few bonus science pellets as compensation.
Occasionally, a 'data analysis' phase occurs inbetween each round of role assigning. These phases typically consist of the following:
- Common traits detected: Two players' roles match up incredibly well; they have a personality trait in common! ..However, one of them's gotta be better than the other. Players typically write for a prompt, and the remainder (and audience) votes for who fit the common trait better. The winner gets bonus science pellets.
- Opposing traits detected (multiple players): "I can't stand not knowing who's better!" Two players are apparently polar opposites. These two players get the same prompt, and must write for something that best fits the trait they were assigned. The remainder then votes for whose answer was better for the prompt, and the winner gets some extra science pellets.
- Unique trait detected: One player has a special role! This gives them a special ability, i.e. stealing some pellets from another player.
"I like to keep my guinea pigs motivated, so I'll give you guys these nutritious science pellets[...] plus, they taste like meat!"
As the game progresses, players earn "science pellets." These are like a score tally, and help make sure there's a difference between people who play good and people who play... a bit less good. Players earn these for:
- getting a role
- 'predicting' who gets a role
- winning a vote in a tie/data analysis prompt
- and more!
The player with the most science pellets at the end of the game wins. Players also get their own personal 'title' made from their traits!
- Majorities Rule – All players get a role without tiebreakers in a 6 player game
- Know Thyself – Get a role you doubled down on
- That Ain't Me – Everyone but you chooses you for a role
- Unclassifiable – Get a consolation role
- Role Models, like Talking Points, Civic Doodle, and Drawful, allows you to customize your player icon.
- You can either draw or take a photo of yourself. The latter can be toggled on/off if the host desires.
- While the game's end credits are onscreen, players can feed the mouth their science pellets. If all the science pellets obtained across the game are fed to the mouth in this end screen, it vomits out all the pellets it was fed.
